Remember that the diocesan registry advises clergy not to marry non-British nationals by banns.

There is good reason for this as this vicar found out.  He could have got 14 years on the first charge that he admitted.

Common Licence is a better method for marrying them as it transfers the burden of responsibility from the clergy to the registry.

They are then responsible for ensuring that procedures are followed and the cleric can hide behind the diocesan registrar in a court of law.

Even better from a vicar’s point of view is only to accept Superintendent Registrar’s Certificates. That ensures that the couple have a Home Office Permit to be married in the UK.
